What is Kirby Peak Ranch? Kirby Peak Ranch is a unique agri-campus and high-tech farm located in Mariposa, California, just outside Yosemite National Park. The 60 acre ranch consists of beautiful rolling hills, jagged mountain peaks, green meadows, a glimmering mountain lake and a state-of-the-art greenhouse structure encompassing nearly 1/2 acre, housing hydroponic and aquaponic systems. Inside you'll find juicy beefsteak tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, fancy lettuces, strawberries, fresh culinary herbs, edible flowers, cucumbers, peppers and many other crops growing in soil-less culture. The fish tanks are home to hybrid carp, largemouth bass, sturgeon and koi. The plant and fish culture systems, the encompassing greenhouse and all related structures are designed with low-energy consumption, efficiency, expandability and practicality in mind. While the facility will be a showplace demonstrating numerous plant and fish growing systems, each component is designed to be profitable on its own. Additionally, recycling of nutrients, waste and all by-products of the operation are incorporated in the design. Introductory guided tours allow visitors to wander among the lush plants while learning about the technologies of soilless plant culture, aquaculture and the combination of these methods, aquaponics. Specialized 2-3 day workshops and conferences provide a structured classroom and a hands-on learning experience and the intensive training program offers enthusiastic students a unique opportunity to learn all facets of this 21st century means of growing food while living on the park-like agri-campus for a 3 month session. Additionally, Kirby Peak Ranch is home to Mother Lode Llama Company, which offers a "Lunch with the Llamas" program and packing trips. |
